Part-time & Summer Employment Programs

Puget Sound students earned nearly $3 million through part-time and summer employment programs administered through Career and Employment Services (CES) last year. These students not only helped pay their college costs, but they also gained practical work experience and career exploration opportunities provided by part-time employment. Each part-time job contributes to a student's developing career path, and provides insight into the role and meaning of work in his or her life.

Last year, CES programs served 1600 students who worked on campus and in the local community.

  • Nearly 1200 students work on campus each year
  • More than 280 students work off campus in career-related, State Work-Study jobs
  • Hundreds more students worked in the local community in the 1500 jobs that we advertised on our part-time job board or through our on-call list

Programs we administer

Federal Work-Study (FWS)
The FWS program is a federally-funded financial aid program designed to stimulate part-time job opportunities for eligible college students, allowing them to help pay for postsecondary education. Students receive consideration for this program by applying for financial aid. The federal grant funds are used to pay up to 75% of student earnings on campus. FWS students receive preference in hiring for on-campus positions. A small portion of the grant is used for off-campus, community service placements.

Nonwork-Study (NWS)
This is on-campus student employment funded entirely by the University. NWS jobs are posted on the part-time job board in our office. All students, regardless of their financial aid eligibility, are eligible to apply for these jobs.

State Work-Study (SWS)
The Washington State Work-Study program is designed to stimulate and promote employment of students in educationally or career-related jobs. Most jobs are off-campus with employers who have agreed to participate in the program. Students receive consideration for this program by applying for financial aid, and residents of Washington State receive priority in placement.

Job Location and Development (JLD)
This program provides off-campus, nonwork-study work opportunities for all students. We work with local employers to identify and develop part-time, temporary, and summer job opportunities for students, which we post on the job board in our office. We provide other job search resources for students, including the on-call list.
