New Editor, Tom Shafer
The LMDA Guide to Dramaturgy Programs is a concise listing of college and university programs in dramaturgy and related fields. Some of the programs included here offer degrees in dramaturgy, some offer a dramaturgy concentration within another degree, and some offer course work in dramaturgy or related areas.
We sent detailed questionnaires to theatre programs across the country to determine what they offer to students of dramaturgy. This listing is a distillation of those responses. An * indicates entries updated in this edition.
This Guide will be updated regularly, and will, we hope, help to raise awareness of the role dramaturgy is playing in higher education.
Please send your updates to Tom Shafer, Chair, UCaucus, Indiana University, Dept. of Theatre & Drama - Theatre T225, Bloomington, IN 47405; tpshafer@indiana.edu.

A two year, five semester professional training program leading to a certificate and Master of Fine Arts degree. Exploring a wide range of performance styles, the program combines practical and academic work at the American Repertory Theatre and a three-month residency at the Moscow Art Theatre School in Russia.
The dramaturgy program provides academic and practical training for literary directors, dramaturgs, and theatre critics. Students complement their studies in dramatic theory, literature, and criticism with close
observation of two of the world's most prestigious theatres. Courses are taught by the dramaturgs and literary directors of the A.R.T. and MXAT, whose professional experience provides an ideal bridge between the worlds of academic study and theatrical production.
Dramaturgy students attend seminars, classes, and tutorials in dramatic literature and history, aesthetic theory, Russian language, and practical dramaturgy. Students serve as dramaturgs and assistant dramaturgs on a wide range of student and professional productions. They play an active role in the daily life of the theatre, writing articles for A.R.T. News, delivering pre-show talks to A.R.T. audiences, preparing program notes for A.R.T. productions, submitting weekly new script reports to the Artistic
Coordinator for New Stages, and participating in the development of new plays. In Moscow, dramaturgy students are taught by Russian literary directors and critics and assist in the development of Institute productions. Students also have an opportunity to engage in primary research of Russian dramatic literature and history.
To earn the M.F.A. in dramaturgy, students must write a thesis and serve as principal dramaturg on a professional A.R.T. production.

MFA Program In Dramaturgy And Theatre Criticism
Requirements
The MFA program in Dramaturgy and Theater Criticism combines intensive scholarship with an abundance of practical experience and professional involvement to prepare students for: the practice of dramaturgy in the complete range of professional theatre. That practice includes production dramaturgy (of both new work and revivals) , literary management, administration of theatre in education programs, the writing of criticism for newspapers and journals, the teaching of theatre and dramaturgy, the practice of adaptation and translation. At the core of the program is a commitment to the dramaturg as an artist and, with the other performance programs, a united faith in the process of collaboration. Therefore, student dramaturgs are integrated into the life of the department and especially work in constant partnership with faculty and student directors, actors. The program is also committed to--and offers venues to accomplish--the generation of original work, both of play texts and criticism.
During the first year, the study includes a rigorous program of seminars in theatre history, dramatic structure, dramatic theory. In addition, courses such as Introduction to Dramaturgy focus on the creation of student projects including engagement with professional playwrights. Also during the first year, students have the opportunity to function as dramaturg on mainstage productions as well as graduate directing thesis projects.
In the second year, students must fulfill two externships in dramaturgy or literary management with a professional performing arts company, agency, or publication. Brooklyn College has a close relationship with many performing arts organization in New York, having placed students with institutions large and small, commercial and not for profit. In the second year, study includes writing workshops, study of education programs, translations/adaptations.

Dramaturgy is becoming an increasingly important part of the production process at Cornish, with work on both new plays in development and on classics. This past season, Theatre History instructor John K. Wilson acted as Dramaturg for productions of The Caucasian Chalk Circle and A Moliere Carnival, and co-wrote and provided dramaturgy for our Shakespearean revue Hamlet and Juliet. Seattle Chidren's Theatre Dramaturg Debbie Frockt was in residence in Fall 1996 to work with director Steve Alter and playwright Jose Rivera on a workshop production presentation of Rivera's Maricela de la Luz Lights the World. In his capacity as instructor of the Theater Department's Original Works program, playwright director Eric Des O'del provides ongoing dramaturgical feedback to students creating new plays and collaborative works for their Senior Thesis projects.

Our program offers a solid grounding in the history, theory and literature of theatre, while offering many opportunities for interdisciplinary research in allied areas, such as performance studies or cultural studies. Although the Program's emphasis is on research, our students come from practical theatre backgrounds, and often pursue directing or dramaturgy opportunities in area theatres. We intend to amplify our dramaturgy opportunities in area theatres. We intend to amplify our dramaturgy faculty in 1997-98.

MA Theatre: Concentration in Dramaturgy, Dramatic Literature, Dramatic Criticism, Playwriting
Hunter College offers a dramaturgy concentration within its 30-credit Theater MA program, which integrates theory with practice and accommodates various backgrounds and career goals. The concentration includes a sequence of courses designed to give hands-on experience with dramaturgy research, script editing and preparation, collaborative methods, and play translation. Students will work as dramaturgs on Hunter College productions alongside both faculty and student directors, and each year several dramaturgy students will be assigned to collaborate with playwright-colleagues during Hunter Playwrights, the college's annual festival of student plays. Dramaturgy internships, which may count as course credit may be arranged at local professional theaters. The Hunter Theater MA was designed as a preparatory program for the Theater Ph.D. at the CUNY Graduate Center, and all Hunter credits (up to 30) are accepted toward that doctorate; the Hunter dramaturgy sequence will also serve the CUNY Theater Ph.D. program.

Theatre Studies
Performance and scholarship are the foundations of Ohio State's theatre graduate programs, which are unique in their broad range of requirements in history, literature, and critical theory. The research-oriented Master of Arts degree is considered preparation for advanced graduate study as an artist-scholar. The Doctor of Philosophy program is designed to serve prospective teachers, scholars, and critics in the theatre arts; and administrators and specialists in civic and regional arts programs. While the candidate may elect to specialize in one or more areas of study, each doctoral program must provide a broad base in the historical, critical, theoretical and creative aspects of the field.

Production Opportunities
Dramaturg with mainstage productions
The M.A. Program in Theatre History and Criticism is a one-year program requiring 45 credit hours and a minimum of three quarters of residency. The student may elect either to write a thesis or to take a comprehensive examination on all course work. If the student wishes to write a thesis in place of taking the comprehensive examination, an additional quarter of residency is expected. A quarter of internship with a professional theatre as a dramaturg or literary advisor may also substitute for the comprehensive examination or thesis. Other requirements include Introduction to Graduate Studies, 4 hours of Practicum, and no more than 12 hours of electives.
The purpose of the degree is to prepare students for scholarly or research activity, whether associated with an academic institution or a professional theatre. Students acquire a general knowledge of theatre history and criticism and study specific areas in depth. The education emphasizes a knowledge of the history and literature of theatre and research methodologies. Students are required to engage in independent research and to convey their ideas orally and in writing. The degree is an excellent basis for introductors teaching in higher education, work as a dramaturg or further study toward a terminal degree in theatre.
The degree is intended for a number of different kinds of students. The program is for students interested in gaining an advanced degree in theatre history and criticism in the context of a professionally oriented School of Theatre. This education can be especially valuable for students interested in dramaturgy. In this case, students gain the solid basis of general and advanced course work in drama, theatre history and criticism, and are able to apply this work through dramaturgy on School of Theatre productions. An internship at a professional theatre would be especially valuable in this case.
The program is also for students who want the first graduate degree in preparation for a terminal degree, whether MFA or Ph.D. The academic rigor and broad scope of this degree can be a valuable testing ground for students to determine their subsequent educational goals.
Finally, this degree is for foreign students who are only able to study in the U.S. long enough to earn a MA degree. In this case, students gain a solid, thorough education in Western theatre history and criticism, as well as scholarly and pedagogical methodologies.
Admission is based on a 3.0 grade-point average in undergraduate work, three letters of recommendation and a sample critical or research paper. A personal interview is recommended.

MA Theatre Arts
Requirements
The MFA in Dramaturgy requires completion of 60 credits. These include working as a dramaturg on departmental productions and completing an internship at a major professional theatre. An MFA project, the ability to translate a foreign language and serving as a teaching assistant is also required.
The MA in Theatre Arts is a pre-doctoral program requiring completion of thirty credits. An MA thesis, the ability to translate a foreign language and serving as a teaching assistant is also required.
Production Opportunities
Since 1984 Stony Brook has been exploring and preparing students for an expanding field of professional opportunities for dramaturgy. Stony Brook seeks to find and nurture dramaturgical collaborators skilled in numerous practical sides of the theatre. Student dramaturgs work from the center of the production process, not as critics burrowing from the outside or from the margins. Dramaturgy students teach, act, write, produce and stage plays in addition to dramaturgy assignments, literary management and coursework in theatre history, dramatic literature and new media. Located 38 miles from New York City, productions in the city are also integrated into class work and courses. The Cabaret @ The Spot, which does 12 productions a year and is run by the dramaturgy students, is their curricular workshop. In their third year, each student completes an MFA project and interns at a major theatre company.

Professional affiliation with Alabama Shakespeare Festival The MFA in Playwriting/Dramaturgy combines creative and scholarly disciplines supporting development of the artist/scholar. The program juxtaposes a sequence of playwriting courses with intensive study in the scholarly disciplines of theatre history , literature, and criticism. Research-in-action is promoted in a variety of forms; dramaturgical practicums, textual adaptation, period-based playwriting, and the presentation of scholarly and creative work. The New Playwright's Program provides the professionally-oriented student with the unique opportunity to work with new scripts and their development. Graduate students serve as both apprentice literary managers and dramaturgs for new play readings and productions. Student work is also given consideration for staged readings and production.
MFA Dramaturgs may serve their third year in the program at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.

90 quarter hours beyond the bachelor's: 5 from the MFA Creative Project The MFA program is designed as a terminal degree concentrating on the areas of production and performance in the dramatic arts, including stage, screen, and television media. The student must pursue one particular specialty area to be reflected in the program of study and in the nature of the final project. Nevertheless, to establish a viable basis for a career in any of these areas, a broad understanding of all creative facets is necessary, and this entails study and practice in other areas. Moreover, a genuinely professional dramatic artist must be one who possesses a cultural awareness of the traditions and patterns inherent in contemporary dramatic art. This entails study of history and theory.

At the root of our educational philosophy is the firm belief that our students and the quality of their artistry/scholarship benefit most from a program encouraging experience in the art, craft, history, and theory of theatre and that appreciation of theatre is essential to a broad humanistic education. To accomplish these goals, we provide the students with experience that comes from the widest possible exposure to our unique cultural environment, to other students, disciplines, departments, and academic activities. This belief has created a program emphasizing the need to produce artists and scholars of the highest caliber and providing those students specializing in a single aspect of theatre with knowledge and ability in other areas of theatre in order to cultivate their appreciation of the arts and history/theory of theatre.

The MA in Theatre Arts is a combination scholarly and practical program of study. It is for the student ready to deepen his or her understanding of the scope and content of world theatre and drama, from classic to contemporary, from East to West, as well as to enrich his or her skills in artistic areas. While stabilizing the student in the fundamentals of research necessary for a theatrical professional, the program provides experience in several of the component crafts of theatre, culminating in a specialized study in a selected artistic or research area. The knowledge and practice achieved in attaining the degree thus provides crucial tools for the developing theatre practitioner, educator or scholar.
