HIMALAYAN BLACKBERRY Himalayan blackberry has large stout canes that start erect, then arch, then trail along the ground rooting at the ends. The canes are usually distinctly 4-angled and armed with stout, recurved prickles. This is the introduced Asian blackberry that forms dense impenetrable thickets on disturbed sites at low elevations in western Washington. The leaves are sometimes evergreen and sometimes deciduous, palmately compound with 3 lobes on flowering shoots and 5 lobes on sterile shoots. The leaflets are smooth and green above and white-hairy below. The flowers are white to pink, 2-3 cm in diameter, with 5 petals and many stamens, in clusters of 5 to 20. The fruits are blackberries (core stays inside fruit when picked) and quite edible. |
