Experiential And
Developmental Goals
by
Academic Year
The following
is a guide to some of the milestones students should reach during their
college experience. In some of
the areas it is a cumulative effect so it is important for individuals to
not miss any of the "pieces".
It is very important to keep in mind that individuals develop at
different times and in different ways.
This may mean you have a first year student that is further ahead in
the process than a senior. But,
in most situations, students in the same class standing are relatively close
and struggling with the same issues.
First Year
-
Establish
two healthy relationships within the University (i.e., faculty, hall,
clubs, organizations, and friends).
-
Make
positive separation from their family, becoming more independent.
-
Take
a diverse group of required classes to investigate different academic
options.
-
Experience
living with large groups of people and learn to accept differences of
thought, interest, etc.
-
Develop
new study habits to ensure success.
Sophomore
-
Continue
to develop bonds with the University.
-
Proceed
on an in-depth evaluation of their career and academic interests and
strengths.
-
Understand
the world of work, skills, and how academic study is related to these.
-
Choose
an academic discipline.
-
Take
risks to explore personal beliefs, relationships, and environment.
Junior
-
Be very involved in one or two University activities
that are healthy and provide bonding.
-
Have used Career Services in exploring and testing their
academic and career decisions.
-
Have academic major selected and form academic
completion schedule.
-
Experience summer or cooperative job experience that is
directly related to chosen major.
Senior
-
Completion
of graduation requirements.
-
Develop
resume and begin job search in Fall session.
-
