Master of Education Program in CounselingThe Master of Education Program in Counseling is designed for those wishing to enter the counseling profession in one or more settings. Individuals who already hold a master's degree may pursue the K-12 certificate in counseling without obtaining a second degree.
School Counseling
The school counseling track leads to the K-12 certificate in Washington state.
Faculty develop individualized plans of study to ensure that all requirements are met. This process is a collaborative one that involves examining transcripts and resumes. All candidates must complete a 400-hour internship in a K-12 setting under the supervision of university faculty and an on-site supervisor. In instances in which candidates have master's degrees in an area related to mental health, such as social work or family counseling, programs can often be completed within one year. Candidates for the certificate-only program must meet the same admission requirements as degree-seeking students.
Individuals who do not have a master's degree complete a predetermined plan of study that leads to the certificate and the M.Ed. degree.
A few courses may be waived based on prior coursework. These determinations are usually made at the time of admission. Certificates are only valid in Washington State and may or may not transfer to other states. Our certification officer, Karen Stump, can provide helpful information. She can be reached at 253.879.3382.
The job market for school counselors in our local area has been excellent in recent years. All recent graduates who have actively sought employment have found it, and some have had more that one job offer. It is likely that population growth and retirements will maintain that trend for the next several years.

Pastoral Counseling
